1. Planned Procedure: Prior to dental implant surgery, you would have had a consult with your dental implant surgeon. Your dental implant doctor would have already performed an oral examination, X-rays/CT scans and discussed treatment options with you. If you chose Dr. Young for your dental surgeon, you can rest assured that he has over 37 years of experience and dedicates his practice solely to implant dentistry and training. Dr. Young is a Diplomate and board certified by the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry. He is also an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. As a patient, you can feel at ease knowing Dr. Young’s surgical experience increases the success rate of your dental implant(s), in turn decreasing your level of pain.
2. Sedation & Local Anesthesia Options: If you are feeling anxious prior to your surgery, your dental implant surgeon can provide you with a sedative or anti-anxiety medication. Your dentist will most likely place you under local anesthesia, so you will be conscious, but should not feel any pain.
3. Minor Discomfort Post-Surgery: Most patients experience minimal pain thanks to your dental implant doctor’s surgical experience, as well as, innovative dental implant techniques. The combination of your dental surgeon’s use of self-absorbing sutures and the fact that dental implant surgery causes very minimal tissue disruptions, keeps the pain level at a minimum. If needed, your dental surgeon can prescribe you pain medication.
4. Know What to Expect: Your dental surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions of what to expect following surgery + Do’s and Don’ts following your surgery. (You most likely will have gone over this during your consultation as well.)
5. Ensure Success: Dental implants have a high degree of success over 95% in most patients, however in those rare instances when they do not integrate to the bone your surgeon will remove bone graft and replace 3-6 months later.
There are many things you can do to help your dental implant procedure be successful (and keep your natural teeth healthy). Practice good oral hygiene by scheduling routine cleanings/check-ups and brushing, flossing and/or using an interdental brush that slides between the teeth. You can avoid damaging your teeth by avoiding: chewing on hard items, tooth staining caffeine and tobacco products and ensuring you get treatment if you grind your teeth.1
Unlike traditional dentures, dental implants require minimal maintenance and last a very long time. (25 to 30 years and longer with proper care) Extensive surgical experience, sedation/local anesthesia options, minor discomfort, detailed post-surgery instructions and a high success rate should help reduce your fear and anxiety of dental implant surgery.
